Written by Karen Hirshon — This tune was inspired by a quiet, beautiful trip on a small ferry boat to Sapelo Island, a home of the African American Gullah-Geechee heritage. These people are descended from enslaved people who worked the Atlantic coastal rice, cotton, and indigo plantations.  Surviving aspects of this culture are a living testament to people’s desire to maintain a connection to their past.
